I was driving across Newry dam this afternoon and as always, looked across the lake. This time of year you don’t see a lot of boats but today I saw something that made me smile.
A small boat was zipping across the water. Two kids were half hunkered down and I guess it was their father driving. They were clearly having a large time, arms in the air and mouths wide open, whether it was fear or pure excitement I couldn’t tell.
It made me remember a very cold day at High Falls, Daddy asking Kyle and I if we wanted to go out on the boat with him. (Of course we did, sir, no need to ask twice)
We bundled up, he put socks on our hands and we left. Heading towards Keowee Key, that little motor was giving us all it had. I’m our minds, that Whaler was the fastest boat ever launched, and the skipper was one of the best. I also think our skipper liked hitting wake to bounce the lowly deck hands around, cause he did it a few times.
The dog was under Daddy’s feet out of the wind, and even though we were freezing, we knew if we complained, he’d turn around. He finally made a wide arc before the bridge and we headed back, just as it started to sprinkle. The rain stung our faces like crazy but it was too fun to care. He never slowed down.
We were shivering by the time we got back to the dock, we managed to pile out, with the dog nearly knocking us in the water to be first. Back home we had cocoa and Ritz crackers, toasted with peanut butter and marshmallows on top( one of Daddy’s culinary top 5). We had to get warm before Mama got home, he said.
Funny how watching some kids getting hauled around the lake brought that memory back. I hope they got cocoa and snacks too, so their mama doesn’t know what they were up to ! ![]()
